BMW has Achieved Record-Breaking Sales Figures in 2023.

The BMW Group recorded sales of 2,555,341 BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce cars last year (+6.5%), setting a new record for the company. BMW, Rolls-Royce, and BMW Motorrad brands also achieved new record growth levels in 2023, with BMW Group sales rising to 718,778 units in the fourth quarter, an increase of +10.3% compared to the previous year.

Jochen Goller, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Customers, Brands, and Sales, stated, “Thanks to close cooperation with retail partners and their remarkable support, the BMW Group achieved its highest-ever sales level in 2023. Customers worldwide are drawn to our distinctive brands, including BMW, MINI, Motorrad, and Rolls-Royce, especially the various driving technologies offered by the BMW product range. With our attractive and technologically advanced new cars, we successfully promoted electric mobility in 2023, achieving our goal of making fully electric vehicle sales account for 15% of total vehicles sold.”

BMW Group once again succeeded in increasing its global sales of fully electric vehicles last year, reaching 376,183 units, representing a year-on-year growth of +74.4%. In the fourth quarter, BMW Group delivered 129,316 fully electric vehicles (+47.7%), significantly outperforming the market in this category and solidifying its position as a leading company in electric mobility.

Goller added, “We at the BMW Group are confident that we will maintain the growth trajectory of battery-electric vehicles in 2024. With 18 fully electric models across various key segments, the BMW Group establishes a solid foundation for dynamic growth in battery-electric vehicles. One out of every five cars delivered by the company this year will be equipped with a fully electric drivetrain, and this figure is expected to rise to one out of every four cars by 2025. The demand for our fully electric models continues to grow, and we anticipate selling over half a million fully electric cars in 2024, thanks to the diversity and quality of our products.”

BMW Brand Leads the Global Luxury Car Segment in 2023

The BMW brand witnessed a growth of +7.3% compared to the previous year, delivering 2,253,835 cars to customers worldwide in 2023, achieving a new record and reaffirming its leading position in the global luxury car sector. Electric vehicles, in particular, gained significant popularity among customers, with 330,596 electric vehicles delivered in 2023 (+92.2%). In the fourth quarter alone, 113,458 fully electric BMW cars were delivered (+55.4%).

Demand also increased in 2023 for higher-priced models such as the BMW 7 Series and BMW X7, with fully electric models, including BMW iX1* and BMW i4*, constituting the majority of sales. BMW X1, BMW 3 Series, and BMW X3 maintained their popularity among customers last year.

With the introduction of the fully electric BMW i5* last year, the BMW Group now offers a fully electric option in each of the main car categories. The fully electric BMW iX2* has been added to the lineup. The first fully electric long-distance travel model is expected to be introduced later this year as part of the BMW 5 Series models.

BMW M GmbH Achieves Striking Growth and Sets New Targets

BMW M GmbH achieved its best-ever result by selling 202,530 high-performance cars in 2023, marking an increase of +14.3% compared to the previous year. The successful launch of high-performance models like M2*, XM*, and M3* Touring contributed to this growth. The fully electric high-performance BMW i4 M50* also stood out. Similar to the previous year, the BMW i4 M50 became the best-selling BMW M car, symbolizing the brand’s systematic shift toward electric mobility. The electric range within the business, luxury, and high-end car categories was completed with the introduction of BMW i5 M60* and BMW i7 M60*.

MINI Achieves Tangible Growth in Battery-Electric Cars

MINI sold 295,474 cars (+0.9%) last year, with an increase in sales of fully electric MINI models by 3.5%, reaching 45,261 vehicles. The fully electric MINI Cooper SE*, launched in 2020, maintained its position as the best-selling MINI model. The fully electric MINI Cooper SE Convertible was introduced to the market last year, and the limited-edition fully electric MINI vehicles, numbering 999, sold out in most markets within a few weeks of their announcement. Fully electric cars now represent 15.3% of MINI’s total sales for 2023.

New MINI models will be introduced throughout 2024, including two new fully electric models, MINI Countryman SE and MINI Countryman E, joining the existing fully electric MINI Cooper SE and MINI Cooper E. Both MINI Cooper and MINI Countryman will be available with conventional fuel engines. The yet-to-be-revealed MINI Aceman will be a compact crossover with five seats, also available as a fully electric model.

Rolls-Royce Concludes 2023 with Record Sales

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars experienced a successful year in 2023, with a surge in global demand for its customizable products and bespoke cars, achieving record-breaking numbers. The brand, headquartered in Goodwood, United Kingdom, delivered 6,032 cars to customers last year, the highest number in its history. Rolls-Royce announced sales growth in most of the fifty markets it operates in.

The company also saw significant growth in the value of bespoke design projects that make Rolls-Royce cars unique and personalized for each customer. To meet the increasing global demand for bespoke design projects, Rolls-Royce expanded its international offices, opening an office in Shanghai in 2023, with offices in Seoul and North America expected to open in 2024. Significant new investments were made in the Goodwood headquarters to support the capabilities of the bespoke design program, including Coachbuild.

Additionally, 2023 saw the launch of the Rolls-Royce Spectre*, the company’s first fully electric car. Deliveries of Spectre models began in the fourth quarter of the year, with orders extending until 2025. Demand for all current Rolls-Royce models remains strong, with Cullinan* being the most requested model globally, followed by Ghost*, while Phantom* remains the flagship model for the brand.

BMW Motorrad Marks Centennial Year with Highest-Ever Sales

BMW Motorrad announced its highest-ever sales in its centennial year, delivering 209,257 motorcycles, an increase of +3.1% compared to the previous year. Europe, Asia, North America, and Latin America particularly contributed to BMW Motorrad’s record-breaking sales levels. The company attributes its successful 2023 performance to its attractive range of brand models, as well as the introduction of new and popular models in the market, such as the powerful M 1000 R and the renowned R 1300 GS Touring Enduro.

BMW and MINI Sales in Regions/Markets

In the United States, a total of 395,741 BMW and MINI cars were delivered to customers between January and December 2023, marking a +9.4% increase. In Europe, the total sales of BMW and MINI cars for 2023 reached 942,805 vehicles (+7.5%). In China, the BMW Group sold 824,932 BMW and MINI cars in 2023 (+4.2%). In Germany, 281,986 BMW and MINI cars were sold during this period.
